5 Website Design Tips For Ecommerce Websites

Website design plays a very important role for any website, and for an e-commerce website which is for attracting and encouraging visitors to buy the products from the website. So, website design is like the face which provides the first impression of your website and hence it should be made and chosen very carefully. The average online buyer has a very short attention span and therefore if you do not have an appealing e-commerce website design than visitors would not interest in your website and may just bounce off without bothering to go deeper and searching for the products they are looking for in your website or website’s pages. You can take the example of various successful e-commerce websites such as Amazon, eBay, Flipkart etc. you will see that they are having their own unique web design and layout that users find comfortable and these designs compel the user to stay on the site. So in case you are planning to start your own e-commerce website, then they choose website design carefully because it will be considered as your store front as you are not having any physical store of yours. Some of the crucial e-commerce web design tips which you should pay attention to are mentioned below:

  1. Don’t compromise with loading time for bulky flash image and graphics: Many e-commerce web designers make the mistake of loading their e-commerce web pages with flash and images with great detail. This may make the site hugely attractive to users, but sometimes it increases the loading time which in turn may lead to visitor loss. So the trick lies in creating a visually appealing site which at the same time loads quickly. For this, use images which are attractive yet load quickly. Downsize the flash quotient and use it only in places where you feel it will necessary.
  1. Navigation: The site should be easily navigable and there should be a well-defined process wherein the users can easily find the path to their desired product. A site search box well optimized so that users reach the most appropriate page for a particular query. A good search engine optimizer would be able to guide you on the navigational facilities that will give you the best results.
  1. An arrangement of categories: Arranging the products into the proper categories is of utmost importance and the correct products need to go into the respective categories. Users should be able to narrow down their searches on the basis of a price tag, colour, size, etc depending on what you are selling on your e-commerce website houses.
  1. Easy options to buy a product: When the user clicks on the ‘buy now’ button, he should have the product placed in his shopping cart. If the buying of products are too hefty then a lot of users may subsequently leave and hence buy options should be easy and understood able for all.
  1. Options for online customer supporter and contact: A live chat and a customer support contact details should be there present on your site because most users are having doubts of online buys and hence want assurance before buying a product. This is where the role of an online customer support comes. A ‘Contact Us’ page should have your details such as email id, phone number, and address which make you easily accessible to the buyers.

One can take the help of other competitors who are doing well in. Take ideas from them but same time, don’t copy blindly. Hopefully, these tips would surely help you to create a site with a good e-commerce website design.

According to a recent estimate, India’s e-commerce business is set to grow at 38% per annum. This will  move fast further  due to the launch of Jio 4G broadband services, the National Broadband Plan and the much-expected opening of the Retail sector.

The relative success and popularity of online sites like, Jabong, Myantra etc have also encouraged many to tap the e-com opportunity. However, dreaming of starting an online business is one thing and getting the entire eco-system in place is quite different. We look at some of the basic requirements of starting an online business in India.:

Build Your Online Store: If you have the money to invest, you may have your own website built that will have your store. However, in case you are just starting up and funds are a limiting factor, get help from online sites such as WordPress or  competitive rates, these sites offer basic services that you may require to set up an online shop – services such as uploading your product/services catalogue, payment procedure, handling queries and online orders.

Further, you should customize your online store so as to reflect the real company. This means, the logo, color schemes should be in complete co-ordination. This is not necessary when your only public interface is your online store. It is also important to make your online store mobile friendly so that it loads easily onto a phone.

Get A Secured Payment Gateway: Payment Gateways are two types in India – One, your own Bank itself which provides its own payment gateway and the other, the third-party services which tie up with many banks to provide a gateway. Rates of these providers vary and hence, you need a do a proper market research on the provider that suits your requirements the best. For a better idea on the type of payment gateway providers, read our blog –

Clearly, Specify The Terms & Conditions: With so many online stores vying for customer ‘footfall’ and offering discounts, competition is tough in the net world. Further, it is very easy to cause customer dissatisfaction with poor store layout, payment problems and unclear terms of services. It is, therefore imperative to specify the shipping terms, the returns policy, etc so that there is no ambiguity in the case of a sale gone wrong. Having said this, make sure that the terms and conditions are not unreasonable so as to scare away prospective customers. Here is a good blog on  Market Your Online Store: In this age of digital channels proliferation, you cannot depend on traditional marketing alone to carry the word for you. What’s more, with an online store, it makes more sense to tie up your marketing efforts digitally, thus leveraging the benefits and visibility offered by platforms like Facebook, TwitterGoogle+YouTube. Adding these channels to your core business will get more visibility with minimal cost.

Keep A Feedback Channel Handy: After all, you are just ‘starting-up’ in the online space and need to learn every trick involved. No better way than to make channels of feedback so that you can improvise on the Form, Grievance Addressing Corner in your online store so that you can nip in the bud any functional anomaly before it balloons to difficult sizes.

How to run a successful e-commerce business

To run a successful e-commerce business we must need to understand the basics of the e-commerce business.

E-commerce business basically means selling your products or services by reaching the peoples and targeting customers all across the globe or the targeted area, and for doing that one will need the organic traffic that is targeted users which are looking or searching for the similar products/services that one is selling or providing on the website and it does not matters what type of goods one is selling on their website it can be jewelry, clothing’s or it can be any electronic product or any antiques.

The type of product not matters a lot if one will not advertise then the chances of getting the revenue and subsequent profit will be decreased even though the website may contain very good products and your website is very user-friendly until and unless people are not aware of the presence of the website, how can they reach to the website.

So, what is the solution? How to target the potential customers for your website? The solution for this is listed below:

Social networking: Try to connect as many people you can with the help of various social networking sites like facebook, Pinterest, twitter etc.

Viral marketing: Choose various tricks to make your website go viral, you can make various good quality videos which may give a short description or idea about your website and you can upload it on youtube, Vimeo, daily motion etc.

Forums and chat rooms: Join various forums and chat rooms that contain threads and topics related to your website so that you can be connected to your targeted clients.

Work on backlinks: Try to link your website with various top ranked websites by creating backlinks.

Trust: This is the most powerful SEO task, try to maintain good products and that too with an easy return policy.

Now the other problem comes is of logistics and delivering the products in minimum time to the right place, for this you will again have to look for a third party who will be providing such services and within your pocket.

Fortunately, you don’t have to blindly guess at the best approach.  Based on my successes and failures and experiences will help you in successful launch of your E-Commerce online venture. Pick an Easy-to-Use Shopping Cart
⦁ Shopify
Spark Pay
3D Cart
You’ll pay a monthly fee for just about any hosted cart, but it will be a small price to pay for not having to worry about security patches, server configurations and regular updates.
If you’re technically inclined and want a bit more control over your store, you’ll want to pick a self-hosted cart.  My top picks for self-hosted cart for a new store owner are WooCommerce and OpenCart.
WooCommerce is a plug-in for WordPress which transforms the popular CRM into a shopping cart.  It’s fairly easy to install and has a number of themes available for it.
OpenCart is a stand-alone open source shopping cart that’s known for being lightweight and easy to customize.  If you’re a bit more comfortable on the technical side I’d recommend going with them.
I do NOT recommend Magento for new store owners despite it’s popularity.  It’s a very powerful cart but is overly complex and extremely difficult to host.  I used to be a Magento user and moved to Shopify due to the complexity and problems it caused – particularly for a small team without a dedicated programmer on staff.
Here’s a list of the most popular self-hosted carts on the market today:
Ultra Cart
Spree Commerce (for Ruby developers)
Satchmo (for Python developers)
I recommend staying away from ZenCart and osCommerce, as they are old platforms that people are moving away from.

Launch as Quickly as Possible
It’s time to kill your perfectionist tendencies!  Launching your store quickly is one of the best things you can do for your fledgling business.
If you’re new to your niche, you likely have no idea who your customers are or what they need.  Oh, you may think you know, but you don’t.  So trying to invest in creating the perfect store to address your customers’ needs, wants and problems is almost certainly a waste of time.  Instead, get a basic store online as quickly as possible to start interacting with your customers to learn more about them.
Once you have a better idea about your niche, then you can improve your website based on your new knowledge.  And while you’ve been collecting all this information, you’ve almost certainly rung up a few sales, too.
Another reason to launch quickly is because it takes a lot of time and effort to market your store.  The sooner you have a storefront up and online — even a really basic one — the faster you can start telling the world about your business, building links and marketing.
In order to launch as quickly as possible, I recommend:
1)  Using stock descriptions and pictures – If you’re new to the niche, you likely know next to nothing about your products!  So use the manufacturer’s information to launch quickly and come back to write unique copy when you actually have something unique and authoritative to say.
2) Using a pre-built template – I don’t care what world-class graphics designers say; you do NOT need a fancy $5,000 custom-built template to do well with eCommerce.  One of my most popular eCommerce stores uses a built-in template, and I have never heard a single customer say, “Hey!  Is this a stock template?  I’m not sure about you guys ….”  Even if you use the most popular template in the world, 99.9% of your customers will have no idea.

Do It Yourself
When starting your first eCommerce site, I strongly recommend doing as much as possible yourself in the beginning.  If you don’t understand how your business fundamentally works, you won’t be able to effectively train a team in the future.  And having to rely on paid contractors (programmers, web designers, etc.) every time you need to make a change is an expensive and helpless position to be in.
Doing things yourself also makes you prioritize what’s important to move forward and what can wait.  It’s really easy to throw money at a problem instead of really analyzing whether it’s: 1) really necessary and 2) a good investment.  When you do most things yourself early on, you’re less likely to waste  money on nonessential items.
I learned this lesson the hard way when I launched  In the past, I’d done just about everything myself, from building the site to marketing and SEO, when launching an eCommerce site.  When it came time to automate the business, I knew it inside and out and was able to competently train a team to manage it for me.
But when launching, I figured I could simply pay someone else to do all the hard work for me!  So I outsourced the site design to an expensive developer and invested a significant sum on a long-term SEO contract for marketing and traffic.  Overall, I invested more than $15,000 getting the site up and running.  With other people doing all the work, I figured this was going to be an easy, painless process!
But then I started running into problems.  When I needed to make a simple change to the site, I had to contact my developers for help.  I wasn’t familiar with the new shopping cart they used, and had to rely on them to make basic changes.  And because I wasn’t spending as much time marketing and connecting with others in my niche, I didn’t understand my market nearly as well.
Finally, more than a year after I hired my SEO firm, the site’s traffic took a huge nosedive when rankings dropped precipitously in Google.  The reason?  The firm I’d entrusted with SEO and marketing had used some sketchy tactics, and we’d been penalized by Google.
I’m now much more involved with’s site design and marketing, but it was an expensive lesson.  Don’t make the same mistake!  You don’t have to do everything forever, but make sure you’re intimately involved with the major aspects of your business early on.  It’s a much cheaper option in the long run.

Market Relentlessly
Most people grossly underestimate how much marketing is required to build a viable eCommerce business.  Especially in the early days, it takes a LOT of effort to get your business on the map and noticed.  For the first six months of any new eCommerce site, I’d recommend the following time priorities:
⦁ Month 1:  Launch a basic site
⦁ Month 2:  Improve your site
⦁ Months 3 – 6:  Market like your business depends on it … because it does!
That’s 67% of your time spent exclusively on marketing!  Not A/B testing, business streamlining or crafting a strategic vision. Not improving your site design or logo.  Fanatical marketing. The majority of eCommerce sites fail because they underestimate how crucial early stage marketing efforts are and don’t gain enough traction.  Don’t let that be you.
You may be thinking, “Chill out with all this marketing hype!  I’ll just run some advertisements.”  It’s true that advertising is a great way to kick-start your eCommerce business in the beginning, when no one knows about you.  And you can instantly drive traffic to your site to learn about your market by interacting with customers. But advertising, especially pay-per-click models like AdWords, is usually a poor long-term strategy for generating traffic.
The most effective advertising methods, like PPC Google ads, are expensive and will severely eat into (if not eliminate) your profits.  Pursuing SEO and other organic marketing efforts will provide a much higher return on your investment, more sustainable traffic and ultimately significantly higher profits.
